2018 Vista Point Guard and longtime Gamepoint player Taurus Samuels has announced his verbal commitment to Dartmouth College.
Samuels chose the Ivy League school over the University of Montana, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Northern Arizona. He is widely considered one of the top "true point guards" on the West Coast.
"It was really tough for me because I had built such a strong relationship with the coaches at Montana and with the school," Samuels said. "But obviously, Dartmouth, being an Ivy League school, that's something that would have been very hard to say no to."
Samuels said that he also bought into the vision of the Big Green coaching staff and head coach David McLaughlin, which is trying to turn the program around after a 7-20 finish to the 2016-17 season.
"Also, the things that the coaches want to accomplish there, to change that program around, that's something that was very special and that I wanted to be a part of," Samuels said.
Samuels has been a member of Gamepoint since fifth grade and has been a fixture on the program's elite teams. This year, he lead the Gamepoint Pump-N-Run team in scoring on the Adidas Gauntlet at 12.7 points per game, and was one of top shooters in the Gauntlet's Gold Division, shooting 59 percent from the field and 52.6 percent from three.
Samuels, an all-San Diego Section First Team selection as a junior, has started every game at Vista High since his freshman year, leading the team to a CIF Open Division semifinal appearance and a second-round Division 1 state playoff appearance during his junior year.
